# DigitalOcean

> AI-native cloud platform offering GPUs, inference, managed databases, Kubernetes, and managed agents for building and scaling applications.

DigitalOcean is a cloud provider founded in 2012 whose first product was the Droplet virtual machine. It now positions itself as an AI-native cloud, spanning infrastructure, inference, data services, and managed agent runtimes. Its site lists 20 data centers across 12 regions.

## What It Is

DigitalOcean is a cloud platform for developers, startups, and small-to-medium businesses. It combines core cloud primitives (Droplets, Managed Kubernetes, App Platform, Functions, networking, storage, backups, and security controls) with AI-specific products such as GPU Droplets, Bare Metal GPUs, and an Inference Engine. The company describes its offering as five layers: Managed Agents, Data & Learning, Inference Engine, Core Cloud, and Infrastructure.

## Inference and Data Layers

The Inference Engine offers serverless, dedicated, and batch inference on one endpoint, with over 70 open-weight and frontier models or bring-your-own-model. An Inference Router (public preview) lets teams define routing policies by natural language or structured rules to balance cost, latency, and reliability. Evaluations run LLM-as-a-Judge comparisons, and a Model Playground and Model Catalog support side-by-side testing across text, image, audio, and video models. Content Safety Guardrails apply policy-based allow, flag, or block decisions to inference requests. For data, it offers Managed Databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL, Valkey, OpenSearch), Knowledge Bases for managed RAG, and Managed Weaviate in public preview.

## Managed Agents

Managed Agents is in Public Preview. DigitalOcean Harness Runtime provides durable, isolated sessions for coding agents that can run in parallel and be paused and resumed. Action Gateway gives governed access to 16,000+ tools through one managed endpoint, with credentials brokered at execution time and not exposed to the model. Launchpad provides starter kits for RAG assistants, data pipelines, and observability. DigitalOcean lists integrations with Claude Code, Codex CLI, OpenCode, LangGraph, Hermes, and MCP.

## Vendor Performance Claims

DigitalOcean states that Artificial Analysis benchmarked DeepSeek V3.2 on its platform with sub-second time-to-first-token and 3.9x higher output speed than AWS Bedrock. Its customer examples, such as Workato and Hippocratic AI, report cost, throughput, and latency improvements; these are vendor-published claims.
