# ManimGX

> Rust and wgpu 3D animation engine with a Manim CE-compatible Python API that renders math and 3D videos to MP4 for agents and developers.

ManimGX is an open-source animation engine from Academa that renders math and 3D videos from Python scenes written against Manim Community Edition's API. A Rust and wgpu core produces the MP4, and the same scenes can run in the browser through Pyodide and WebGPU. It installs with pip (Python 3.13+) or via an agent prompt, and the latest release listed is v0.1.1.

## What It Is

ManimGX is a programmatic video engine. You write a Python scene (for example a ThreeDScene subclass with mobjects, animations and camera settings), then run `manimgx render scene.py` to get a 1080p60 MP4. It covers 2D and 3D together: surfaces, meshes and moving cameras alongside text, equations and plots. Text and math can be written in LaTeX or Typst without a LaTeX installation.

## Built for Agents

The project is positioned as an animation API for AI coding agents. Users can paste a prompt pointing to its llms.txt into Claude Code, Codex or Cursor, and the agent handles installation and scene creation. `manimgx inspect` gives agent feedback through storyboards and 2D layout checks at play endings or chosen times. The API is fully statically typed, including keyword arguments and `.animate` chains.

## Rendering and Browser Use

The renderer uses wgpu for native GPU rendering and WebGPU in the browser. Via `npm install manimgx`, Python runs in a Web Worker through Pyodide, so scenes can be embedded in a web page without a render server. Linux wheels bundle Mesa's lavapipe for CPU Vulkan rendering when no suitable GPU is present. Speech can be synced to animations with `self.say()`.

## Performance Claims

The project's own benchmark reports 36.2 seconds of video rendered in 3.08 seconds across five 1080p60 scenes on an Apple M4 Pro, which it states is 90.6x faster than ManimCE, 11.5x faster than ManimGL and 18.7x faster than Blender Workbench. These are vendor-published results, with scenes and settings published in the repository's benchmarks folder.

## Licensing

ManimGX's own code is MIT-licensed; native wheels include x264 and are GPL-3.0-or-later as a whole, and bundled components keep their own licenses.
