# Plane

> Open-source project management and knowledge management platform for teams and AI agents, combining work items, cycles, wiki, and AI-powered workflows in one unified workspace.

Plane is an open-source project management platform built by Makeplane that unifies project tracking, documentation, and AI-powered workflows into a single workspace. It is available as a cloud service, a self-hosted deployment, and an air-gapped edition for environments with strict data control requirements. The core repository is licensed under the GNU Affero General Public License v3.0 and has accumulated over 60,000 GitHub stars.

## What It Is

Plane positions itself as a modern alternative to Jira, Linear, Monday, and ClickUp, combining project management (called Work), a built-in Wiki, and Plane AI into one platform. The product is structured around four modules: Work (project and issue tracking), Wiki (knowledge management), Plane AI (workspace-aware AI agents), and Desk (customer support, listed as coming soon). Teams can plan work through initiatives, epics, cycles, and modules, and view it across five layouts: List, Board, Calendar, Gantt, and Spreadsheet.

## Core Capabilities

- **Work items and cycles**: Rich work item tracking with sub-properties, custom types, and time-boxed cycles with burndown charts and velocity tracking.
- **Initiatives and epics**: Roll up project-level work to org-level goals with progress tracking across every layer.
- **Wiki and pages**: Built-in documentation with real-time collaboration, nested pages, version history, and the ability to convert text directly into work items.
- **Intake**: Capture requests via in-app forms, public web forms, or dedicated email addresses, then triage them into work items.
- **Dashboards**: Auto-populating dashboards with cycle velocity, workload, and scope change tracking — no manual report setup required.
- **Workflows and approvals**: Define allowed state transitions and require sign-offs without plugins.
- **Plane Compose**: Define projects as YAML, version them in Git, and deploy from the terminal — treating project configuration as infrastructure.

## Plane AI and Agent Support

Plane AI is described by the product team as built around AI from the start rather than retrofitted. It reads across every project, cycle, doc, and thread in a workspace to answer questions about status, blockers, and recent changes. AI agents can be assigned to work items like teammates, triggered by @mentions, assignments, work item events, or schedules. The platform also ships a native MCP server and an Agent Development Kit, enabling external AI systems to manage work inside Plane. Slack integration allows teams to @mention Plane in any channel to create and assign work items directly from conversation.

## Deployment Model

Plane supports three deployment paths: Plane Cloud (managed SaaS), a self-hosted Commercial Edition, and an air-gapped edition for environments with no external network access. Self-hosting uses Docker Compose for quick setup or Kubernetes with Helm charts for production scale, and supports bring-your-own Postgres, Redis, and S3-compatible storage. The Prime CLI handles install, upgrade, backup, and monitoring with single commands. An admin panel called God Mode provides centralized control over SMTP, authentication, SSO, and telemetry.

## Security and Compliance

Plane states it is independently audited and certified across SOC 2, ISO 27001, GDPR, and CCPA. Identity and access features include SSO, SAML, OIDC, and LDAP. Role-based access control (RBAC) is available on paid plans, with granular access control (GAC) at the Enterprise Grid tier. API-enabled audit logs and group sync from identity providers are also available at the enterprise level.

## Update: v1.4.2

The latest GitHub release is v1.4.2, published in August 2026, with the repository last pushed in late September 2026. The project has been actively developed since its open-source debut in 2023, when issue tracking, cycles, and project workflows were first released publicly. The product roadmap includes Desk (customer support) as the next major module, and Microsoft Teams integration is listed as coming soon alongside the existing Slack integration.
