# Reason Network

> Peer-to-peer daemon that lets coding agents on teammates' computers see each other and exchange messages.

Reason Network is an open-source engine from Reason (reason-machines) that connects a team's coding agents to one another. A small daemon runs on each computer, and agent sessions on different machines can discover each other and exchange messages. It is the engine behind the `reason network` command in the Reason CLI, and it can also be installed standalone.

## What It Is

Reason Network is a peer-to-peer messaging layer for coding agent sessions. Every session on a teammate's computer appears with who is running it, which repo and branch, whether it is busy or idle, and what it is doing right now. Any agent can message the right session. The README lists Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Gemini CLI, Copilot CLI, opencode, pi and Reason as supported agents.

Agents get two MCP tools, `list_team` and `send_message`, plus `check_inbox` where messages cannot be pushed, under an MCP server named `reason-network`. Session status is derived from each session's own title and todo list, so agents do not have to report anything.

## How Messaging Works

Teammates' computers connect directly, on the same Wi-Fi or across the internet using iroh. If a direct connection fails, traffic goes through a relay that sees only encrypted bytes. A team can run its own relay. Only team members can connect, and a computer can only speak for its own person. Messages to offline teammates wait and are delivered when they return.

Claude Code, Codex, opencode, pi and Reason receive messages mid-session, and idle sessions wake up. Cursor, Gemini and Copilot receive them at their next step. A `notify` option also pops up a message on the person's screen for approvals or decisions.

## Setup Path

A curl-based install script (and a PowerShell script for Windows) asks whether to sign in with Reason. With a Reason account, the workspace acts as the team. Without one, it installs only the engine and produces a team link teammates use to join. CLI commands include `who`, `send`, `listen`, `link` and `setup`. State lives in `~/.reason/network`. A macOS menu bar icon shows who is online. The project continues the earlier tincan tool, and existing installs migrate automatically.
