# Scite

> AI research platform that uses Smart Citations to show whether papers are supported or contrasted by later research and answers questions from full-text literature.

Scite is an AI-powered research platform, now part of Research Solutions, that helps researchers discover and evaluate scientific literature. Its Smart Citations classify how later papers cite a work as supporting, contrasting, or mentioning. The site says it covers 322M+ indexed articles and has agreements with 44+ publishers.

## What It Is

Scite combines a citation index with an AI research assistant and full-text search. A deep learning model analyzes citation statements and labels each as supporting, contrasting, or mentioning, with the citing context and the section where it appears. Scite says its answers are grounded in real papers and link back to the specific source sentence.

## How the Workflow Works

- **Assistant:** answers research questions from full-text literature, for literature reviews, fact-checking and discovery.
- **Search:** matches on citation statements extracted from full text rather than only titles and abstracts, with filters and alerts.
- **Reports:** show every citation a paper received, with the exact citing text, filterable by classification, section, year or source type.
- **Collections:** built from Zotero, Mendeley, a CSV of DOIs, or search results, and monitored for new supporting or contrasting citations and retractions.
- **Reference Check:** upload a manuscript PDF to see how each reference has been cited, including retractions and editorial notices.

## Where It Fits

Scite says it runs inside Claude, ChatGPT and other MCP-compatible assistants, and offers an API, a browser extension and a Zotero plugin. The open-source Zotero plugin adds Smart Citation columns (supporting, contrasting, mentioning, totals) to a Zotero 7+ library and opens Scite reports from the right panel. It needs no account or API key.
