Products & Services
Open-source and commercial PostScript/PDF interpreter, rendering engine, and graphics library supporting PDF, PostScript, PCL, XPS, and raster workflows; commercial Ghostscript Office adds Office-document processing.
Ultra-small, fast, customizable PDF SDK/core engine for rendering, viewing, manipulation, and document creation in desktop, server/cloud, embedded, and web applications.
High-performance Python library built on MuPDF for PDF and other document extraction, analysis, conversion, rendering, annotation, and manipulation.
LLM/RAG-oriented document extraction tooling that extracts text and tables, preserves reading order, understands document structure, and outputs structured Markdown/JSON.
Market Position
Artifex positions itself as a long-established open-source document-processing company combining lightweight, high-performance engines with enterprise licensing and support. Its differentiation is deep PDF/PDL expertise, broad format coverage, low-level control and fast extraction/rendering for developers, plus commercial SDK/API/SaaS options; it competes with proprietary PDF SDK and document-intelligence vendors such as Apryse/PDFTron, PSPDFKit/Nutrient, Adobe PDF Services, Foxit, and cloud OCR/document-AI platforms.

Founding Story
Dr. L. Peter Deutsch began Ghostscript as an open-source PostScript interpreter project in 1988, influenced by his Xerox/PARC language-engineering background and encouraged by friends at Adobe. Commercial licensing demand followed the initial release, including early printer use, and Artifex was created in 1993 to facilitate commercial licensing while continuing the open-source project. Artifex describes its broader history as beginning with Ghostscript in 1989.
