Founding Story
The idea for Base44 began after October 7, 2023, while Maor Shlomo was serving in IDF reserves. After his military service, he traveled to Koh Pha Ngan, Thailand with his partner, Yuval Dahan. He tried to build a website and management system for Dahan's tattoo business using WordPress and found it too difficult. He realized AI could write the code needed, it just didn't have the right environment to do it. He began experimenting with AI tools and built Base44 as a bootstrapped side project. After leaving Explorium where he had raised $130M over 7 years, he chose to build Base44 solo without any venture capital. The company started with a hunch that if people were given the right starting point and traditional friction was removed, they would create incredible things. He built a system where you describe what you want, and it appears.
