BIT-DataLab
BIT DataLab is a research group at the School of Computer Science, Beijing Institute of Technology, focused on data management, database systems, data-centric AI, large language models, data lakes, graph and spatio-temporal data, distributed processing, and intelligent data analysis. It builds practical systems, open-source tools, datasets, and benchmarks; Edit-Banana/EditFigure applies that research to converting static figures and visual content into editable assets.

Products & Services
Open-source framework that converts static figures, diagrams, formulas, images, and PDFs into editable DrawIO XML, SVG, or PPTX content.
Web service at editbanana.net for uploading images and reconstructing editable diagrams. It offers an all-elements-editable mode and a text-editable mode, with high-definition export.
Market Position
BIT DataLab positions Edit-Banana/EditFigure as an open-source, research-driven universal content re-editor rather than a conventional drawing tool: it combines fine-tuned SAM3 segmentation, multimodal-LLM scanning, OCR, and reconstruction to produce independently editable diagram elements. Comparable work in the editable-figure/illustration space includes Paper2Any, PaperBanana, and AutoFigure-Edit; Edit-Banana differentiates around static-image/PDF-to-DrawIO/SVG/PPTX reconstruction and an available self-hostable open-source core.

Founding Story
The project was started to address the problem that charts, diagrams, formulas, and other content embedded in static images or PDFs cannot be directly edited. Its initial vision was a universal content re-editor that uses segmentation, multimodal model scanning, and OCR to reconstruct the original layout and relationships in editable DrawIO, SVG, or PPTX formats.
Business Model
Revenue Model
The online service uses a credit-based, pay-per-use model: users can try recognition/editing without signing in, while signing in and spending credits is required for exporting. The repository README says registration provides 10 free credits and that usage-based billing is intended to prevent resource abuse.
Pricing Tiers
Upload an image or choose a sample without signing in; the homepage says export requires sign-in and credits.
The homepage lists All Elements Editable and Text Editable modes as consuming 100 credits; no currency price list was published in the fetched sources.
