EleutherAI
EleutherAI is a nonprofit AI research lab that trains and releases open models, datasets, and tools, and studies how models learn, how to evaluate them, and how to make open-weight systems safe. Its mission is to keep foundation-model research accessible to independent researchers and advance interpretability, alignment, and public understanding of AI capabilities and risks.

Products & Services
An openly available large-scale, diverse English text dataset for training language models.
Open language-model family created to reproduce GPT-3-like capabilities for researchers outside proprietary labs.
Open autoregressive language model released under an open license for research and applications.
Open distributed-training framework and a 20-billion-parameter autoregressive language model; the framework supports large-scale training across GPU systems.
Market Position
EleutherAI positions itself as an independent, nonprofit, open-science alternative to closed frontier AI labs: it publishes the code, data, checkpoints, and evaluation methods needed to study and reproduce large-model research. Its LM Evaluation Harness is a widely used open benchmark framework and backend for Hugging Face's Open LLM Leaderboard; adjacent competitors or substitutes include Hugging Face, LAION, AI2, BigScience, OpenMMLab, and proprietary labs such as OpenAI, Google DeepMind, and Anthropic.
Leadership
Founders
Connor Leahy
Founding organizer and early technical contributor; had access to Google TPU Research Cloud through earlier GPT-2 work and helped initiate the effort to reproduce GPT-3 openly.
Sid Black
Founding organizer and machine-learning engineer who contributed to EleutherAI's early GPT-Neo and GPT-NeoX model work.
Leo Gao
Founding organizer and early EleutherAI researcher/engineer who helped build the open GPT-3-replication effort.
Executive Team
Stella Biderman
Executive Director
AI researcher and organizational leader; helped lead the transition from a volunteer collective to the nonprofit institute.
Quentin Anthony
Head of HPC
EleutherAI technical leader focused on high-performance computing and large-scale model training infrastructure.
Board of Directors
Founding Story
EleutherAI began in July 2020 as a Discord server (initially called LibreAI) created by researchers and developers who wanted to replicate GPT-3 in the open. The group formed because frontier language-model research was concentrated inside large companies and independent researchers lacked access to model weights, training data, compute, and the ability to inspect or modify models; it incorporated as a nonprofit research institute in early 2023 so contributors could work full time while keeping research open.
Business Model
Revenue Model
Nonprofit model funded primarily by donations and grants, with additional in-kind compute and infrastructure support from partners; public software, models, and datasets are generally released openly rather than sold as a conventional subscription product.
