Exafunction, Inc.
Windsurf builds AI-powered coding tools that empower developers to dream bigger and be more productive. The company develops the Windsurf Editor, an AI-native IDE with Cascade, an agentic coding assistant that enables developers to code faster and more efficiently.
Founding Story
Varun Mohan and Douglas Chen, who first met in middle school and later became classmates at MIT, founded Exafunction in June 2021. Before starting Exafunction, they saw first-hand the promise and challenges of deploying deep learning models in the real world. The company initially focused on building serverless infrastructure that abstracts away the challenges of deep learning and GPU virtualization. In 2022, they pivoted from Exafunction to Codeium, transforming the company's focus from GPU management to AI-powered developer tools. In April 2025, they rebranded to Windsurf, reflecting a shift from an autocomplete plugin to a full AI-native IDE.
