Products & Services
Open-source, AI-powered business intelligence platform released under AGPL-3.0 (GitHub: helicalinsight/helicalinsight, ~387 stars, 118 forks). Combines three generations of analytics in one product: self-service drag-and-drop BI, Instant BI conversational analytics over natural language, and pixel-perfect paginated 'canned' reports for invoices and P&L statements. API-driven and extensible so teams can add custom functionality without vendor dependency. Self-hosted, Docker-ready, deployable on-premises or in the cloud.
Free-forever edition that, since July 2026, includes every enterprise feature with no artificial limits: AI conversational analytics with bring-your-own-LLM, interactive dashboards, pixel-perfect reporting, embedded analytics, SSO, row-level security, multi-tenancy, white labeling, report scheduling, and report bursting.
Commercially licensed edition with functionally identical capabilities to Community, differentiated by SLA-backed support, professional implementation services, account management, and branding removal. Sold as a monthly subscription (single use case), a core-based license (unlimited use cases), or a perpetual license (single use case, unlimited distribution). One-month free trial.
Chat-based data engineering and data wrangling product from Helical IT Solutions, letting users build and manage data pipelines through natural language.
Market Position
Helical Insight competes as the unified open-source alternative to both legacy paginated reporting suites (SAP Crystal Reports, TIBCO JasperReports, Microsoft SSRS) and modern per-user BI SaaS (Tableau, Power BI). Its distinguishing bet, made in July 2026, is inverting the usual open-core model: rather than reserving SSO, embedding, multi-tenancy, and white labeling for paid tiers — the standard gating in open-source BI — it ships all of them free and monetizes only support and services. Its other differentiator is combining paginated pixel-perfect reporting with self-service dashboards and conversational AI in one product, where most competitors do one or two of the three. Bring-your-own-LLM keeps AI analytics compatible with on-premises and privacy-sensitive deployments.

Founding Story
Helical Insight launched in 2016 and was open-sourced on GitHub that September. It came out of its creators' consulting work: Nikhilesh Tiwari and Nitin Sahu, school friends who reconnected during their MBA, had founded Helical IT Solutions in Hyderabad in 2012 after an earlier healthcare IT venture failed, and spent those years delivering data warehouse and BI implementations on Pentaho, Talend, and Jaspersoft. Seeing how expensive and restrictive legacy BI licensing was for mid-market customers, they built Helical Insight as their own open-source alternative — first as the first open-source BI framework with machine learning and NLP for search-driven analytics, and eventually as a platform that gives away every enterprise feature and charges only for support.
Business Model
Revenue Model
Open-core inverted: the AGPL-3.0 Community Edition is free forever and includes every product feature, so revenue comes from Enterprise support and services rather than gated functionality — SLA-backed response times, professional implementation, account management, branding removal — alongside consulting and data-engineering services sold by its publisher, Helical IT Solutions.
