Generative AI assist tool for auto-querying, debugging, code explanations, and generating SQL from natural language prompts. Integrated AI that augments data workflows.
Conversational analytics interface using natural language for answering data questions. Agent-driven interface that pulls context from data connections, projects, and semantic models to provide accurate insights.
Market Position
Hex positions itself as the unified, AI-powered platform for data science and analytics that bridges the gap between technical and non-technical users. Unlike traditional tools like Jupyter Notebooks (which lack collaboration and sharing), legacy BI tools like Tableau and Mode (which are less flexible for technical users), or fragmented point solutions, Hex offers an integrated workspace combining notebooks, BI, data apps, and AI agents in one platform. Key differentiators include real-time collaboration, AI-powered assistance (Hex Magic, Threads), ability to seamlessly blend SQL/Python/R with no-code interfaces, reactive compute model, and deep integrations with the modern data stack (Snowflake, Databricks, dbt). Hex emphasizes being the collaborative layer that makes data work shareable and governable while remaining flexible for power users.

Board of Directors
Founding Story
Hex was founded at the end of 2019 by Barry McCardel, Caitlin Colgrove, and Glen Takahashi, who met while working at Palantir Technologies. While working at a healthcare startup, McCardel noticed that despite having a modern data stack, data teams' workflows remained fragmented across one-off SQL scratch pads, Jupyter Notebooks, and spreadsheets. After searching for an existing solution and finding none, the three co-founders decided to build Hex themselves. They aimed to solve the 'sharing gap' in data work—the lack of collaborative tools for modern data teams to share their work, which led to reliance on static PDFs, screenshots, and fragmented files. Their vision was to build a collaborative platform enabling data scientists to work together to deliver insights while empowering business users to find answers, creating a professional way for teams to work together and share results in real-time.
