Founding Story
Penpot is built by Kaleidos, a Madrid-based technology company founded in 2011 by Pablo Ruiz-Muzquiz and Enrique Posner as a hybrid technology partner for startups and an incubator for its employees' ideas. During the pandemic, Kaleidos pivoted its focus to building and launching Penpot as an open-source, self-hostable alternative to proprietary design tools like Figma. Penpot went from alpha in February 2021 to general availability in February 2023, and its sign-ups famously spiked around 5,600% after Adobe's $20B move to acquire Figma in September 2022. The platform expresses designs as real code (SVG, CSS, HTML, JSON) so developers can inspect and ship without translation layers.
