Products & Services
MIT-licensed, open-source, self-hosted personal AI assistant available through text and voice. The stable track uses intent-based NLU and modular skills; the 2.0 Developer Preview adds tool use, context, layered memory, and agentic execution.
The active develop-branch rebuild with smart, controlled, and agent execution modes; native and SKILL.md-backed agent skills; context grounding; layered memory; computer/browser use; local or remote model providers; and proactive pulse behavior.
Command-line companion used to install and manage Leon instances across GNU/Linux, macOS, and Windows, including commands such as leon create birth and leon start.
A side project by Grenard that converted URLs, documents, and text files into audio; its private alpha supported 159 voices and 30 languages and was intended as a possible future Leon module.
Market Position
Leon is positioned as an end-user, self-hosted personal assistant rather than a general-purpose LLM orchestration library. Its differentiators are local ownership/privacy, voice-and-text interaction, modular skills, and a transition toward context-aware agentic execution. The closest comparison set includes self-hosted personal agents such as Hermes Agent and SuperAGI, long-term-memory agent platforms such as Letta, and developer frameworks such as LangChain, LangGraph, CrewAI, AutoGen, and Semantic Kernel; those alternatives generally emphasize orchestration libraries, multi-agent coordination, or agent memory rather than a directly installable personal assistant.

Founders
Louis Grenard
French software developer; GitHub identifies him as the person building Leon since 2017. He studied at EPITECH and Beijing Jiaotong University, moved from France to China in 2017, previously worked at NOA Labs, later joined Alibaba Group's Lazada business, and is based in Shenzhen.
Executive Team
Louis Grenard
Creator and maintainer of Leon
Independent French developer based in Shenzhen; GitHub author and principal contributor to Leon. His background includes EPITECH and Beijing Jiaotong University, NOA Labs, Alibaba Group/Lazada, web agency work, and open-source/community projects.
Founding Story
Leon began after Grenard saw Mark Zuckerberg's 2016 Jarvis project and wanted to understand speech-to-text and text-to-speech. He built an initial Web Speech API proof of concept on a train, then in early 2017 expanded the idea into a practical assistant for daily-life tasks such as querying a financial tracker. He created the private repository on November 4, 2017, later redesigned Leon as a modular project that could help other people, and released it publicly under the MIT license in February 2019.
Business Model
Revenue Model
Leon is distributed as free, MIT-licensed open-source software rather than as a paid hosted product. Grenard supports development through GitHub Sponsors; users bear their own hardware costs and any fees from optional remote model providers.
Pricing Tiers
MIT-licensed software installed and run by the user; no account or hosted subscription is required.
Optional sponsorship to support Grenard's development time; the official site links to GitHub sponsorship.
