Products & Services
Hosted Mermaid workspace for creating, sharing, presenting, and collaborating on text-based diagrams, with cloud storage and team features.
Open-source JavaScript diagramming and charting library that renders Markdown-inspired text definitions into diagrams such as flowcharts, sequence, class, state, ER, Gantt, mindmap, architecture, Sankey, quadrant, timeline, and user-journey diagrams.
AI-assisted diagramming that turns natural-language prompts, documents, code, schemas, and conversations into editable Mermaid diagrams; supports prompt-based redesign and AI Repair.
GUI editor for designing and refining diagrams while keeping visual edits and Mermaid syntax bidirectionally synchronized; supports collaboration and sharing.
Market Position
Mermaid Chart differentiates from general-purpose visual whiteboards and drag-and-drop diagramming tools such as Lucidchart, Miro, Mural, and draw.io by making text/code the source of truth: diagrams are reviewable, diffable, versionable, and kept beside documentation and software. It competes for enterprise workflow and knowledge-management use cases while extending the open-source Mermaid.js community with AI generation, a GUI editor, collaboration, presentations, and integrations.
Leadership
Founders
Knut Sveidqvist
Swedish software architect and developer who created Mermaid.js in 2014 after encountering the limitations of Microsoft Visio; he built Mermaid as an open-source, Markdown-like diagramming tool while working at a telecom company in Sweden. He is Mermaid Chart's CTO and technical founder.
Open Core Ventures
Open Core Ventures, founded by GitLab co-founder and CEO Sid Sijbrandij, partnered with Sveidqvist to commercialize the Mermaid open-source project and handled company formation and early business infrastructure.
Executive Team
Andrew Firestone
Chief Executive Officer
Serial entrepreneur and investor who joined Mermaid Chart about a year after its formation through Open Core Ventures; he brought business, product, growth, and fundraising experience and led the $7.5 million Seed financing.
Knut Sveidqvist
Chief Technology Officer and Founder
Creator of Mermaid.js and a software architect with more than 20 years of software experience; he originated the open-source project and leads its technical and open-core evolution.
Board of Directors
Founding Story
Sveidqvist started Mermaid after losing a Visio file and having to redraw a diagram; he wanted diagrams represented as text so they could be versioned alongside documentation and code. As the open-source project grew beyond what he could sustainably maintain on evenings and weekends, Open Core Ventures approached him in 2022 with an open-core commercialization model, formed Mermaid Chart with him, and later introduced Andrew Firestone as CEO.
