Meta Llama
Meta Llama is Meta's open-source/open-weight family of large language and multimodal foundation models, released so developers, enterprises, researchers and governments can build, fine-tune and deploy AI systems with control over the model and data. Its stated rationale is that openness broadens access to AI and accelerates ecosystem innovation.

Products & Services
Original 65B foundational language model released for research access.
Open model family for research and commercial use, distributed with Meta's community license and supported by Microsoft and other ecosystem partners.
8B and 70B open models designed for instruction following, coding, reasoning and general-purpose text generation.
8B, 70B and 405B models; the 405B model was positioned as a frontier open model suitable for fine-tuning and distillation.
Market Position
Llama is positioned as the leading open/open-weight alternative to closed model families such as OpenAI GPT, Google Gemini and Anthropic Claude, with competition also from Mistral and DeepSeek. Its differentiators are downloadable weights, fine-tuning and deployment control, a large partner ecosystem, safety tooling and a no-lock-in path from hosted API experimentation to self-hosting; Meta's own Llama 4 announcement compares Scout and Maverick directly with Gemma, Gemini, GPT-4o, Mistral and DeepSeek on selected benchmarks.
Leadership
Executive Team
Ahmad Al-Dahle
Former VP and Head of Generative AI at Meta
Led Meta's generative-AI organization and the team behind the Llama family from 2020 until joining Airbnb as CTO in January 2026.
Founding Story
Meta introduced LLaMA in February 2023 as a 65-billion-parameter foundational language model, in response to the need for smaller, efficient foundation models that could be studied and used by the research community. Meta subsequently expanded the project into a broader open ecosystem with commercial-use releases, safety tools, partner deployment, and developer tooling.
Business Model
Revenue Model
Llama's downloadable weights are distributed to developers and organizations under Meta's license rather than sold as a conventional standalone software subscription. Meta's ecosystem strategy is to drive adoption of open models, while hosted inference can be provided through Meta's Llama API preview and numerous cloud, hardware and inference partners.
Pricing Tiers
Models can be downloaded from llama.com and Hugging Face subject to the applicable Llama Community License and acceptable-use terms.
Announced at LlamaCon on April 29, 2025; offered API keys, playgrounds, SDKs, fine-tuning and evaluation for selected users.
