Products & Services
A database-first backend that layers on an existing SQL database without migration, providing a visual no-code data studio, automatic REST and GraphQL APIs, authentication, granular permissions, workflows, files, dashboards, and developer tooling.
Managed cloud hosting for Directus, offered alongside self-hosted and hybrid deployment options.
An extension ecosystem and marketplace for installing or distributing app, interface, layout, display, endpoint, hook, operation, panel, and bundle extensions; the official marketplace listing showed 86 results across four pages during this research.
A unified enterprise backend for multiple workspaces, data/content sources, builders, business users, developers, and AI agents, with governed access, APIs, visual studio, MCP, AI co-pilot, security policies, and audit trails.
Market Position
Directus positions itself as database-first and open/extensible: it sits on the customer's SQL database and combines developer APIs and backend tooling with a no-code studio, rather than replacing or locking the customer into a proprietary database. It competes with no-code tools such as Retool and Airtable and with headless CMS/backend platforms, differentiating through direct SQL ownership, granular governance, self-hosting, and a shared permission model for humans and AI agents.

Founding Story
Ben Haynes started Directus in 2004 while building web projects through his consultancy, to avoid repeatedly rebuilding authentication, authorization, database connectivity, data access, caching, and post-launch administration. The project remained a side project through later work at SoulCycle and AOL; in 2020, growing customer demand led Haynes and Rijk van Zanten to make it a full-time startup and company.
