Products & Services
Free, open-source distributed database with OceanBase’s native distributed architecture and full kernel capabilities; compatible with MySQL and Oracle modes and designed for high availability, scalability, and mixed transactional/analytical workloads.
Commercially licensed, self-hosted edition for mission-critical deployments, with enterprise support and deployment on private cloud, hybrid cloud, or on-premises infrastructure.
Fully managed multi-cloud database service with pay-as-you-go access through OceanBase and cloud marketplaces; available across AWS, Alibaba Cloud, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure, and other cloud channels.
Apache-2.0 open-source AI-native search database that unifies relational, vector, full-text, JSON, and GIS data in one engine for hybrid search, RAG, built-in AI functions, and agentic applications. It supports embedded and client/server deployment and is available through the pyseekdb Python SDK.
Market Position
OceanBase positions itself as an open-source, unified distributed database for transactions, analytics, and AI rather than a single-purpose distributed SQL or vector-search system. Its main comparison set includes TiDB, CockroachDB, YugabyteDB, Google Cloud Spanner, SingleStore, PostgreSQL/pgvector, Milvus, and Elasticsearch; OceanBase differentiates through a single multi-cloud engine, strong consistency, HTAP, MySQL compatibility, and production heritage at Alibaba/Ant scale, while seekdb targets the AI-native hybrid-search segment.

OceanBase founder and chief scientist. He studied at Peking University, joined Alibaba in 2010, and led the distributed-database effort that became OceanBase; he is also described by OceanBase as its founder and chief scientist.
Executive Team
Evan Yang
Chief Executive Officer
Joined Alipay in 2009; was a core member and technical leader of Ant Group’s middleware team, contributed to 11.11 technology iterations, and led creation of Ant’s financial-grade cloud-native platform for external customers.

Founding Story
The project began inside Alibaba/Ant Group in 2010 in response to rapidly increasing transaction concurrency and shorter development cycles. The initial vision was to build a self-developed distributed relational database that could deliver consistency, availability, and scalability for Alibaba-scale production workloads; it was first deployed in Taobao/Alibaba e-commerce and later proven in Alipay and the 11.11 shopping festival.
