    Railway Corp

To build the cloud computing stack that unburdens developers, allowing them to focus more on what matters. Railway aims to unleash a new golden age of software by reducing shipping friction to zero, making it trivial for engineers to deploy code without thinking about servers, AWS, or YAML.

    Railway Cloud Platform
    2021

An all-in-one intelligent cloud provider for deploying web apps, servers, databases, and more with automatic scaling, monitoring, and security. Features zero-ops architecture designed for AI-native workloads with custom-built networking stack, compute, storage, and orchestration.

    Nixpacks

Open-source container generator using Nix for zero-config builds, developed as an alternative to Buildpacks

    Railway CLI

Command-line interface tool for local deployment, tunneling, and interacting with Railway projects via terminal

    Canvas/Railway Metro

Visual drag-and-drop infrastructure interface showing real-time collaborative view of all services, databases, and their relationships

    Market Position

Railway positions itself as a high-performance Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) that bridges the gap between the simplicity of serverless and the flexibility of long-running servers. Key differentiators: (1) Infrastructure Ownership - operates its own hardware/data centers rather than reselling AWS/GCP, claiming 50% cost savings and 3x faster performance than previous providers; (2) Automatic Vertical Scaling - dynamically adjusts CPU/memory without manual configuration, unlike competitors like Render that require manual scaling; (3) Agentic Speed - deployments fast enough to keep pace with AI coding assistants; (4) Usage-Based Pricing - pay only for active compute time with app sleeping, avoiding over-provisioning costs; (5) Multi-Service Architecture - native support for managing frontends, APIs, workers, and databases in a single collaborative canvas; (6) Built-in CI/CD - native PR preview environments and instant rollbacks without third-party tools (advantage over Fly.io); (7) First-Class Database Support - one-click deployment for multiple database types. Competes with: Heroku (more modern, better scaling), Vercel (supports long-running servers, WebSockets, heavy workloads), Render (automatic scaling, multi-region), Fly.io (better built-in CI/CD), and hyperscale providers like AWS/Azure/GCP (simpler, more cost-effective).

    Jake Cooper

Started coding at age 13, learning C++, Visual Basic, and jQuery. As a 14-year-old, he made over $10,000 trading virtual hats online. Studied engineering at the University of Victoria (2013-2017). Worked remotely at Wolfram Alpha for two years focusing on developer experience (Linting, Docker, and Continuous Integration). Later worked at Bloomberg and then at Uber scaling infrastructure for Jump bikes and scooters before the project was sold to Lime. Founded Railway in 2020 at age 22-23.

    Founding Story

Railway was founded in 2020 to address the infrastructure bottleneck that makes deploying even simple applications difficult without deep DevOps knowledge. Jake Cooper started building the platform after leaving Uber, frustrated by how complicated it was to deploy code. He aimed to create a system that allows engineers to automatically receive industry best practices for building and deploying apps, making infrastructure invisible rather than just easier. The platform was released publicly in 2021.

    Business Model

    Revenue
Achieved 176x revenue growth with 15% month-over-month expansion. Railway crossed a significant undisclosed revenue milestone as of their blog post. Template marketplace reached nearly $3M in GMV with goal of $1B marketplace GMV.

    Revenue Model

Usage-based pricing model where customers pay by the second for active resources consumed (CPU, memory, storage, egress). Revenue is generated through: (1) Monthly subscription fees for specific tiers (Trial, Hobby, Pro, Enterprise), (2) Usage charges above included credit amounts, (3) Enterprise add-ons including dedicated VMs, HIPAA BAAs, extended log history, and support SLOs, (4) Template marketplace revenue sharing (25% to template creators), (5) Partnership program and affiliate referrals.

    Pricing Tiers

    Free Trial
    $0 (one-time $5 credit, valid 30 days)

No credit card required. Limits: 5 projects (1 after trial), 3 services per project, 1 vCPU/0.5GB RAM per service, 10-minute build timeout, 3-day log retention
