Products & Services
An AI model that transforms existing videos into new ones by applying styles specified by a text prompt or reference image. Video-to-video generation capability.
Text-to-video generation model that removes the need for structure conditioning and tackles text-guided video generation directly. Generates videos from scratch based on text descriptions.
Foundation model built for large-scale multimodal training with improvements in fidelity, consistency, and motion. Features photorealistic humans with expressive characters, artistic interpretation capabilities, fine-grained temporal control, and industry customization options. Can create highly detailed videos with complex scene changes.
State-of-the-art tool for generating expressive character performances inside Gen-3 Alpha using simple video and voice inputs. Faithfully represents eye-lines, micro expressions, pacing, and delivery without motion capture equipment or manual face rigging. Includes safety features with public figure detection and blocking.
Market Position
Runway positions itself as a pioneer and industry leader in AI-powered video generation, distinguishing itself through: (1) Applied research approach with proprietary foundational multimodal models like Gen-3 Alpha and Gen-4; (2) Web-based, collaborative platform rather than traditional desktop software (Adobe, Avid) or mobile-first apps (CapCut); (3) Professional-grade tools specifically designed for filmmakers, studios, and creative professionals; (4) First-to-market advantages in commercially available text-to-video technology; (5) Strategic partnerships with Hollywood studios (Lionsgate) and major tech companies (Adobe, Google, NVIDIA); (6) Commercially safe enterprise solutions with licensed content (Getty Images partnership); (7) Consistently ranking No. 1 on Video Arena leaderboard, outperforming competitors like OpenAI Sora, Google Veo, and Pika Labs; (8) Focus on democratizing professional video production while maintaining high-end creative control; (9) Integration into professional filmmaking workflows through direct studio partnerships and Adobe Creative Cloud; (10) Emphasis on world model research for consistent character, location, and object generation across scenes.

Board of Directors
Founding Story
The three founders met between 2015 and 2016 while studying at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts ITP programme, united by a desire to understand algorithmic methods for generating and automating content. They were researchers and students focused on machine learning models for creative media. After observing how computational creativity and neural techniques could serve artists, they officially founded Runway in 2018 to focus on the frontiers of artificial intelligence. The company initially raised a $2 million seed round to build infrastructure for deploying models at scale for multimedia. It originally functioned as a model directory before shifting to build deeper AI-enabled video editing tools. Their goal was to democratize content creation and filmmaking, making it accessible to everyone regardless of artistic background or resources, treating AI as a 'new camera' for a new form of art and storytelling.
