Products & Services
Free, open-source, MIT-licensed and self-hostable no-code database application builder for web and mobile apps. It provides a relational data foundation plus visual table, view, page and workflow builders, an extensible module system, multitenancy and deployment options ranging from local Docker/npm installs to hosted instances.
Consulting services from the platform's original developer: application discovery and build, business analysis and design, build support, training, platform improvement sponsorship, custom modules/development and bespoke hosting.
Market Position
Saltcorn positions itself as an open-source, no-license-fee and self-hostable alternative to closed SaaS/no-code and enterprise application platforms. Its differentiation is a structured relational-data foundation, extensibility and visual builders combined with deployment and ownership control: customers can run it behind their own firewall, avoid vendor lock-in and keep improving applications as processes change.

Director; Founder and original developer
British-Danish founder who started Saltcorn in 2020 and has led its product and open-source development; his public profile describes him as a data-science team leader building predictive-analytics products.
Founding Story
Tom Nielsen began creating Saltcorn in March 2020 and worked on it more or less full-time during lockdown. He wanted a mentally stimulating project, but also saw open-source no-code as a way to democratise software creation and give organisations—including those handling sensitive data or unable to afford proprietary products—an option they could self-host, own and control. The initial vision was a long-term, value-focused alternative to closed enterprise platforms and rent-extracting implementations.
Business Model
Revenue Model
The core Saltcorn software is free, open source and has no license fee. Saltcorn Collective monetises through professional services—application discovery/build, business analysis, support, training, sponsored open-source platform improvements, custom development and bespoke hosting—while also accepting community contributions through Open Collective. Client-sponsored improvements are released back into the open-source core, and clients retain the intellectual property in applications built for them.
Pricing Tiers
The hosted saltcorn.com service is offered for trying out the platform; the project states that there are no guarantees about security or availability for this exploratory service.
