Turso, Inc
Turso builds an open-source, SQLite-compatible database engine rewritten in Rust and a managed cloud platform designed for applications that need many lightweight databases. Its core proposition is a database per agent, user, or tenant, with local, browser, device, and cloud deployment on one architecture.

Products & Services
MIT-licensed, SQLite-compatible in-process SQL database engine written in Rust; embeddable locally, on-device, in browsers through WebAssembly, and usable through language bindings.
Managed cloud service for creating and operating SQLite-compatible databases, with serverless access, replication, branching, analytics, team access, infrastructure management, and database fleets.
Local-first replication that keeps a database on a device or in a browser synchronized with Turso Cloud, with push/pull APIs and conflict handling.
Browser-native Turso database delivered through WebAssembly and OPFS, with an asynchronous API for local/offline web applications.
Market Position
Turso positions itself between embedded SQLite and managed distributed databases: it keeps SQLite compatibility and file-level portability while adding Rust, async execution, concurrent writes, vector search, browser/device operation, embedded replication, and a managed cloud fleet model. Public competitor references include Cloudflare, PlanetScale, and MotherDuck; Turso differentiates around database-per-entity economics, local-to-cloud continuity, and open-source control.

Founders
Glauber Costa
CEO and co-founder. Began in Linux kernel work with Pekka Enberg; worked on virtualization, storage, and containers at IBM and Red Hat; spent almost a decade at ScyllaDB as VP of Field Engineering; then was a Staff Engineer at Datadog, where he authored the Glommio Rust async executor.
Pekka Enberg
CTO and co-founder. Early employee at ScyllaDB; previously a Linux kernel maintainer contributing to memory management and virtualization, and earlier a backend developer. His focus is the intersection of distributed systems, databases, and operating systems.

Founding Story
Turso began as an effort to build the next evolution of SQLite after the team observed, through operating a cloud service based on SQLite, that SQLite's single-writer model, synchronous API, limited change capture, and lack of native vector capabilities constrained modern cloud, browser, AI, and agent workloads. The project, initially called Project Limbo, was a ground-up open-source Rust rewrite intended to preserve SQLite compatibility while adding modern concurrency, async operation, vector search, and cloud-scale deployment.
Business Model
Revenue Model
Usage-based managed database cloud subscriptions. Customers pay for plan capacity and overages for storage, rows read, rows written, and sync; enterprise customers can purchase higher-scale capabilities and BYOC deployment. The open-source engine is MIT licensed and serves as the adoption and product foundation.
Pricing Tiers
Free tier with included storage, reads, writes, and sync allowances; no credit card required.
Price shown when paid yearly; includes 2.5 billion rows read/month, 10GB monthly embedded syncs, and up to 1,000 databases according to the launch announcement.
Price shown when paid yearly; includes 100 billion rows read/month and 24GB monthly embedded syncs according to the plan announcement.
Price shown when paid yearly; includes 250 billion rows read/month and 100GB monthly embedded syncs according to the plan announcement.
Enterprise plan with capabilities including AWS VPC allow lists, BYOC, encryption, data residency, and support.
