Founding Story
Android Inc. began in 2003 with an initial idea for a camera operating system, then pivoted toward an open-source operating system for phones. The founders believed handset makers and carriers needed a shared, customizable platform rather than closed, carrier-controlled software; Google acquired Android in 2005 and continued the open-platform strategy.
Business Model
Revenue Model
Android's core platform is distributed as an open-source project and its SDK license is worldwide, royalty-free and non-exclusive for developing applications for compatible Android implementations. Android itself is not a separately reported company; Google's broader ecosystem monetization includes Google Play and Google services on supported devices.
Pricing Tiers
AOSP source code and Android development resources are publicly available; the SDK license is royalty-free for compatible Android application development.
