    About Android Skills

Android Skills is an Apache 2.0 licensed repository from the android GitHub organization. It provides modular, markdown-based skill files (SKILL.md) that ground LLM coding agents in Android development patterns and workflows drawn from developer.android.com guidance. Skills install through the Android CLI or as agent plugins for Claude Code and Codex.

    What It Is

Android Skills follows the open-standard agent skills format, in which each skill is a markdown file giving a technical specification of a task. The aim is to give agents specialized domain knowledge so they carry out Android tasks according to recommended practices. According to the README, development focuses on use cases where evaluations show LLMs underperform, rather than areas where they are already proficient, such as basic Jetpack Compose best practices.

    Installing and Updating Skills

The Android CLI installs a specific skill, for example r8-analyzer, into a project, or installs all skills for every detected agent. Options let users target particular agents or a project path. If omitted, only the android-cli skill is installed, and with no agent directories present, skills go to the Gemini and Antigravity location. Skills can be updated individually or all at once. The repository can also be added as a plugin marketplace in Claude Code and Codex.

    How Skills Are Used

Once installed, agents activate relevant skills automatically when a prompt matches the task, such as asking to make an app UI edge-to-edge. The README notes that AI can make mistakes and results should be double-checked. Public contributions are not accepted at this time, though feedback and new skill requests can be submitted as GitHub issues.
