boxd
boxd builds composable, persistent, hardware-isolated Linux computers for developers and AI agents. Its platform lets teams create, fork, snapshot, checkpoint, pause/resume and hibernate real KVM machines, with API/CLI control and near-zero idle cost.

Products & Services
Hosted service of persistent KVM Ubuntu 24.04 VMs with root access, persistent disk, automatic HTTPS domains, SSH/CLI access, forks, snapshots, checkpoints, hibernation, sharing and API control.
Single-binary CLI for creating and managing machines, snapshots, checkpoints, domains, secrets, integrations and jobs; a gRPC/API layer and TypeScript/Python SDKs support automation.
Self-hostable deployment delivered as a single Rust binary on KVM-capable Linux hardware, with no Kubernetes, external Postgres or Redis; supports private infrastructure, EU residency, SSO/audit logs and annual licensing.
Open-source lttle-cloud project underneath the platform: a KVM microVM manager, orchestrator and TCP/TLS proxy targeting near-instant startup, OCI images and cloud-agnostic/bare-metal deployment.
Market Position
boxd positions itself against ephemeral/container-first agent sandboxes and cloud development environments by offering persistent KVM VMs, kernel-level isolation, live forks of running state, sub-10ms boot, zero/near-zero idle cost, automatic URLs and self-hosting. Its official FAQ contrasts it with E2B, Daytona, GitHub Codespaces and Modal: boxd emphasizes long-running stateful agents, real Linux machines, forkable stacks, SSH and EU-sovereign/private deployment rather than stateless functions or devcontainers.

Founding Story
boxd was started because the laptop/localhost workflow does not fit parallel, increasingly autonomous coding agents: laptops constrain concurrency, expose personal credentials, stop work when closed, and make sharing difficult. The founders' initial vision was a fast, secure, reproducible and shareable remote environment that can be spun up in milliseconds, forked like a Git worktree, and controlled by humans or agents without a platform-team ticket.
Business Model
Revenue Model
Credit-based pay-as-you-go cloud billing: customers buy credits and machines consume them based on vCPU-hours, RAM actually in use and disk written. There is no monthly plan or per-seat fee. Custom annual-license deals are available for larger machines, volume pricing and self-hosting.
Pricing Tiers
Starting credit grant after adding a payment method.
RAM is billed on memory in use and disk on data written; default 2-vCPU/8-GiB machine is described as about $0.26/hour at full memory.
Bigger machines, volume pricing, or boxd on customer hardware; self-hosted offering includes EU data residency, SSO/audit logs, annual license and dedicated support.
