Canva
To empower everyone in the world to design anything and publish anywhere. Canva democratizes design with intuitive, web-based tools that allow anyone to create professional-looking visual content.
Founding Story
In 2007, Melanie Perkins was teaching design to fellow university students in Perth, Australia, and grew frustrated with how slow, complex, and expensive professional design software like Photoshop and InDesign was to learn and use. She and her partner Cliff Obrecht founded Fusion Books, an online tool that allowed Australian high schools to create yearbooks using drag-and-drop editors and templates. This proved the concept that design tools should be intuitive and accessible. To scale beyond yearbooks, Perkins flew to San Francisco and crashed on her brother's floor for months, pitching to VCs. She heard 'no' over 100 times. The couple even learned to kitesurf to network with VCs in Maui. They finally secured seed funding in 2012-2013 and found their technical co-founder Cameron Adams, a former Google designer. In 2013, Canva officially launched to a waiting list of over 50,000 people, bringing their vision of democratizing design to life.
