Founding Story
CVAT began at Intel in 2017 as an internal tool because computer-vision engineers faced an annotation bottleneck and existing tools were closed, limited, or difficult to scale. The team enhanced the open-source VATIC tool, released CVAT on GitHub in 2018, and spun the project out as an independent company in July 2022 to turn the open-source platform into a broader data-centric AI business.
