Market Position
CVS Health competes as an integrated health-solutions company combining a large retail pharmacy footprint, PBM, insurer and care-delivery assets. Its principal competitive set includes Walgreens Boots Alliance and Walmart in retail pharmacy, UnitedHealth/Optum and Cigna/Evernorth in insurance and PBM, and providers such as ChenMed and Humana in value-based senior care. The integration of pharmacy, benefits, insurance, clinics and home-based care is its central differentiator, while scale, reimbursement pressure and regulatory scrutiny are material competitive constraints.

Founding Story
In 1963, Stanley and Sidney Goldstein and Ralph Hoagland founded the first Consumer Value Store in Lowell, Massachusetts, selling health and beauty products. The name was changed to CVS in 1964; the original vision was a convenient, value-oriented health-and-beauty retailer, later expanded through pharmacy, benefits, insurance and care delivery.
Business Model
Revenue Model
Diversified health-care revenue: insurance premiums and services; pharmacy-benefit-management services and pharmacy network/claims economics; retail, specialty, mail-order and infusion pharmacy sales; health-care delivery and provider-enablement services; and related care/technology services. CVS Health is a public operating company rather than a venture-funded subscription software business.
