Market Position
Granola positions itself as a human-first AI meeting workspace rather than a conventional recording bot: it runs on the user's device, works across meeting platforms and in-person conversations, starts from the user's own notes, and makes the resulting context useful across teams and external AI tools. Its differentiation is strongest against bot-based meeting assistants such as Otter.ai, Fireflies.ai, Fathom, and Zoom AI through no-bot capture, human guidance, privacy controls, and a broader conversation-context/API/MCP platform.

Founding Story
Chris Pedregal and Sam Stephenson started Granola in early 2023 after thinking about how AI could improve work. They wanted to build human-first tools that augment judgment rather than replace it, using large language models to turn the context of everyday conversations into useful work output. The initial product vision was a deceptively simple notepad that listens in the background, combines the user's own rough notes with the transcript, and produces trustworthy, structured meeting notes without a bot joining the call.
