The founders launched Infracost as an open-source project in late 2020 after observing that DevOps and SRE teams could launch cloud resources without seeing price tags until the bill arrived. Their initial vision was to show the cost of infrastructure choices inside the engineering workflow, before code reached production, so engineers could make cost-aware decisions and avoid expensive rework.
