Infracost
Cloud cost and FinOps policy platform that shows cost estimates and policy violations for infrastructure as code in IDEs, CLI, AI agents and pull requests.

About Infracost
Infracost, made by Infracost Inc, shifts cloud cost management into engineering workflows. It parses Terraform, CloudFormation and AWS CDK projects locally and shows cost estimates, FinOps policy violations and tagging issues across AWS, Azure and Google Cloud before deployment.
What It Is
Infracost is a cloud cost avoidance and FinOps governance platform that integrates with infrastructure as code workflows. Engineers see cost estimates in the CLI, IDE extensions, AI coding agents and CI/CD pull request comments, while FinOps teams configure policies, guardrails, price books and tagging policies in Infracost Cloud. The docs state that no cloud credentials or secrets are sent to the API and that Infracost does not change IaC state or cloud resources.
How the Workflow Runs
The vendor describes four steps: integrate, configure, optimize and report. Integration places cost estimates and best practices into local workflows and CI/CD. Configuration covers custom guardrails, price books and tagging policies. Optimization uses Issue Explorer to find waste in existing resources, and Infracost opens a pull request with fixes for review. Reporting measures time and money saved across teams.
Where You Use It
- CLI:
infracost scanreturns a resource cost breakdown, flagged policy violations and tagging issues. It can also estimate from Terraform plan JSON. - IDE: extensions show code lens cost estimates above resource blocks in VS Code, Cursor, JetBrains, Zed, Neovim and other editors.
- AI agents: agent skills for Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, OpenAI Codex, Cursor and Gemini CLI let agents scan IaC, fix tagging violations and generate policy-compliant infrastructure within a budget.
- CI/CD: pull request comments show cost diffs and violations, with guides for GitHub Actions, GitLab CI and Azure DevOps.
Neovim Plugin
infracost.nvim is an Apache-2.0 Neovim plugin (Neovim 0.10+) that uses the infracost-ls language server. It provides inline code lens costs, hover breakdowns, diagnostics, code actions, a resource panel and OAuth login for Terraform and CloudFormation files.
