Market Position
Positioned as the leading open-source AI coding agent alternative to proprietary tools like Cursor, Replit, Windsurf, and Lovable. Key differentiators: (1) Open source with Apache 2.0 license for transparency and customization, (2) Model-agnostic supporting 500+ models vs. vendor lock-in, (3) Transparent pricing with no markup on AI inference, (4) All-in-one platform covering IDE, CLI, Cloud, and deployment, (5) 'Kilo Speed' philosophy emphasizing end-to-end ownership and rapid iteration, (6) #1 AI coding app on OpenRouter by usage. Competes on openness, flexibility, and price transparency rather than proprietary features.

Board of Directors
Founding Story
Founded in March 2025 as a fork of Roo Code. The company name derives from the philosophy that AI will produce code 'by the kilo' in bulk volume. Initial mission was to build the world's best open-source agentic development tool. Sid Sijbrandij and Scott Breitenother were introduced by a mutual friend following the sale of Breitenother's previous venture, Brooklyn Data. The company assembled a ten-person team within its first week of launch.
