Founding Story
Founded in March 2025 as a fork of Roo Code. The company name derives from the philosophy that AI will produce code 'by the kilo' in bulk volume. Initial mission was to build the world's best open-source agentic development tool. Sid Sijbrandij and Scott Breitenother were introduced by a mutual friend following the sale of Breitenother's previous venture, Brooklyn Data. The company assembled a ten-person team within its first week of launch.

Revenue Model
Open-core Commercial Open Source Software (COSS) model. Revenue generated through: (1) AI usage subscriptions (Kilo Pass) with up to 50% bonus credits, (2) Teams and Enterprise platform subscriptions ($15/user/month and custom pricing), (3) Pay-as-you-go AI inference through Kilo Gateway at provider rates with no markup (company monetizes through platform features, not API usage), (4) Team collaboration and organizational features sold separately.
Pricing Tiers
Access to all Kilo products (IDE extensions, CLI, Cloud Agents, App Builder, Slack). Pay only for AI model usage through Kilo Gateway at provider rates, or BYOK (Bring Your Own Keys), or use free/budget models.
AI usage subscription. Converts 1:1 to credits that never expire, plus up to 50% bonus credits (monthly bonus expires at month end, annual gets flat 50% monthly bonus). Equals $28.50/month in total credits.
