Show HN launch: Ledge.sh – Runnable Markdown Notes.
The project published installers for macOS Apple Silicon, Linux x64/arm64 and Windows x64, alongside its server installer and mobile-client instructions.
The public project documentation highlighted the open Android beta and SSH-connected iPhone/iPad client.
Products & Services
The core runnable-Markdown notebook: code fences run in place with streaming output, each note has a persistent shell, and notes support live preview, links, tags, search, daily notes, templates, panes and tabs.
A free server component installed with `curl -fsSL https://ledge.sh/server.sh | sh`; it hosts notes and runs their shells on a Linux or Mac machine, reachable by the desktop and mobile clients over SSH. It supports pairing and encrypted S3-compatible backups.
A free App Store client that keeps no notes locally and opens, edits and runs notes on the user's own Mac or Linux server over SSH.
An open-beta Android 10+ client distributed through Google Play testing; it connects to a user's Ledge server over SSH.
Market Position
Ledge positions itself as a standalone, cross-platform, free/open-source and local/self-hosted alternative to runnable-notebook, runbook and terminal-workflow tools. In the public launch discussion, comparable products and approaches included Runme, Marimo, Quarto, R Markdown, Emacs org-babel, Mask, Obsidian and Fiberplane; Ledge differentiates with a real persistent shell in each note, SSH/server execution, mobile clients and no hosted account or service.
Leadership
Founders
Dan Stevens
Creator and primary maintainer of Ledge (GitHub handle danhstevens); he also publishes the Ledge Notebook iOS app and maintains other open-source projects including anypost/emailmd. The Ledge creator said he built it after repeatedly copy/pasting commands from notes into a terminal and had been building it since July 2026.
Executive Team
Dan Stevens
Creator and maintainer
Primary GitHub maintainer of the ledgesh/ledge repository, creator of the Ledge Notebook iOS app, and author of the public Show HN launch.
Founding Story
Dan Stevens said he started Ledge to eliminate the split between notes and frequently run terminal commands: he was tired of copy/pasting commands from notes into a terminal and wanted a Markdown notebook with a real shell, while retaining the organization benefits of terminal-management tools. He described daily-driving it for deploys, API calls and smoke tests before its October 2026 public launch.
Business Model
Revenue Model
Free and open-source software distributed as desktop/mobile clients and a self-hosted server. The project says there is no account, hosted service or side database; users run it locally or on their own server.
Pricing Tiers
The Android page and App Store listing describe Ledge as free; the repository is licensed Apache-2.0.
