Founding Story
William Falcon began developing PyTorch Lightning in 2015 while at Columbia University. He open-sourced the framework in 2019 during his PhD studies at NYU and his research tenure at Facebook AI Research (FAIR). In 2020, Falcon co-founded Grid.ai with Luis Capelo to provide an infrastructure platform for AI research and production. In June 2022, Grid.ai rebranded as Lightning AI to better align with the PyTorch Lightning ecosystem and its expanded vision of an end-to-end AI platform. In January 2026, Lightning AI announced a merger with billionaire-backed data center operator Voltage Park to create a vertically integrated AI-native cloud.
