    MNE-Python
    2010

BSD-licensed open-source Python package for importing, preprocessing, visualizing, and analyzing MEG, EEG, sEEG/iEEG, ECoG, and fNIRS data, including forward/inverse modeling, source estimation, connectivity, statistics, machine learning, and time-frequency analysis.

    MNE-C

The original C implementation of core MNE functionality for MEG/EEG analysis.

    MNE-MATLAB

MATLAB interface and implementations of core MNE-C analysis functionality, distributed through the MNE ecosystem.

    MNE-CPP

C++ framework providing core MNE functionality and real-time functional brain-imaging capabilities.

    Market Position

MNE-Python is a leading open-source Python ecosystem for end-to-end M/EEG and broader electrophysiology analysis. It differentiates through breadth of acquisition-format support, forward and inverse modeling, source visualization, BIDS and scientific-Python interoperability, extensive tutorials, and a large community-maintained suite; adjacent alternatives include FieldTrip, Brainstorm, EEGLAB, and commercial vendor toolchains.

    A(

    Alexandre (Alex) Gramfort

Research scientist and machine-learning/signal-processing specialist; currently Research Science Director at Meta Reality Labs. Previously research director at Inria leading the MIND/Parietal team, assistant professor at Telecom Paris, and researcher at Harvard University's Martinos Center. The official MNE credits identify him as the creator of MNE-Python in 2010, and his bio calls him its initial creator and core developer.

    Founding Story

MNE-Python was created in 2010 by Alex Gramfort as a Python port of MNE software, whose original core was written in C by Matti Hämäläinen. The initial vision was to make the established MNE analysis functionality available in Python and then extend it substantially for modern neuroscience workflows and additional modalities.

    Business Model

    Revenue Model

MNE-Python and the MNE tools are distributed as free, open-source software under the BSD-3-Clause license. The project is maintained by distributed contributors and supported through research funding and institutional partners rather than a documented commercial subscription or usage-fee model.
