ModelScope Community
ModelScope Community is an Alibaba-initiated open-source AI model community and Model-as-a-Service innovation platform. It lowers the barrier to AI development by letting developers and researchers discover, experience, download, fine-tune, train, evaluate, infer, and deploy models, datasets, tools, and interactive applications.

Products & Services
Open-source model hub and Python ecosystem for discovering, downloading, sharing, and running models across computer vision, NLP, audio, multimodal, video, speech, and generative-AI tasks.
A repository of community and Alibaba datasets, including high-quality Chinese-language datasets used for model development and evaluation.
Free, flexible AI application hosting and demonstration spaces where users build and share interactive applications based on ModelScope model capabilities.
A standardized API service for selected open-source LLMs, multimodal models, and text-to-image models; the official documentation describes it as free, non-commercial, and non-profit, with dynamic quotas and Magicube-based call costs.
Market Position
ModelScope is positioned as an Alibaba-backed open-source model hub and full-stack ecosystem, comparable to Hugging Face for model and dataset hosting and to AWS Bedrock for managed access to models, but differentiated by its large Chinese-language model inventory, Alibaba/Qwen ecosystem, integrated studios, training/evaluation toolkits, MCP/Skills catalogs, and local-plus-cloud deployment paths. Alibaba described it as China's largest AI model community; its 2025 reported scale was over 18 million users and 100,000 models.
Leadership
Founders
Institute for Intelligent Computing (Alibaba DAMO Academy)
Alibaba's global research initiative; it developed the initial ready-to-deploy ModelScope models and initiated ModelScope with the China Computer Federation's Open Source Development Committee.
CCF Open Source Development Committee (China Computer Federation)
The China Computer Federation committee that partnered with Alibaba's Institute for Intelligent Computing in establishing ModelScope as an open-source model community and innovation platform.
Founding Story
ModelScope was founded by Alibaba's Institute for Intelligent Computing in conjunction with the CCF Open Source Development Committee in June 2022 and publicly launched by Alibaba Cloud on November 3, 2022. The initial vision was to make AI technology more transparent and inclusive by reducing the cost and technical threshold for universities, smaller companies, developers, and researchers to test, customize, and run AI models.
Business Model
Revenue Model
The community platform is primarily an open-source ecosystem and free developer service. Online model testing is free, and the official API-Inference documentation explicitly describes that API as non-commercial and non-profit; commercial, high-concurrency or SLA workloads are directed to commercial AI platforms rather than the free inference service.
Pricing Tiers
Dynamic concurrency and quotas; calls are accounted for in Magicubes. The documentation gives indicative costs of about 0.5 Magicubes for lightweight models, 1 for standard models, and 2 for flagship models per call.
