Founding Story
Lew Cirne founded New Relic in 2008, two years after selling his first company Wily Technology to CA Technologies for $375 million. He saw the opportunity to bring application performance monitoring to the cloud-first and mobile-first world. The name 'New Relic' is an anagram of his name 'Lewis Cirne'. Cirne started his career as a professional developer at Apple in 1992 and later worked at Hummingbird where he researched Java technology. He bootstrapped Wily Technology with $5,000 each from seven friends. With New Relic, he aimed to create a dashboard for digital projects in a world where every business is becoming a software business.
