Market Position
Umami positions itself as a privacy-first, open-source alternative to Google Analytics, emphasizing no cookies, no surveillance, data ownership, self-hosting, and a simpler workflow. Its broader analytics scope places it in the same consideration set as Plausible, Matomo, Fathom, and other privacy-focused tools, while its product and behavioral analytics capabilities overlap with GA4, Mixpanel, Amplitude, and PostHog; its differentiators are the combination of open-source self-hosting, managed Cloud, privacy by default, and a unified acquisition-to-revenue platform.

Founding Story
Mike Cao created Umami in late 2020 as a personal project after finding Google Analytics complicated, slow, marketer-oriented, and problematic from a privacy perspective. He built a faster, simpler analytics tool for his own websites in about a month and open-sourced it; strong adoption through Hacker News, Reddit, and the wider open-source community turned the side project into a business, which Mike founded with his brothers Brian and Francis in 2022.
