About Background Agents
Background Agents is an open-source, self-hostable framework that lets entire teams—not just engineers—ship code through autonomous background coding agents. From a simple description, the agent handles coding, testing, and PR creation, so PMs, designers, and engineers can all contribute without local environment setup. Sessions run asynchronously, meaning you can kick off a task at midnight and review the finished PR over breakfast. Built on Cloudflare Workers, Modal-powered sandboxes, and a Next.js web client, it integrates with GitHub, Slack, VS Code, and more.
- Zero Setup — Every session comes pre-configured with your full stack (repo cloned, dependencies installed, database seeded, dev server running) in seconds, so anyone can start without local environment configuration.
- Async by Design — Agents work while you sleep; start a session anytime and review the resulting PR whenever you're ready.
- Unlimited Concurrency — Every team member can run parallel sessions simultaneously—PMs, designers, and engineers all working at once with no bottlenecks.
- Multiplayer Sessions — Share a session URL with colleagues so multiple people can prompt, make changes, and collaborate in real time.
- Multi-Surface Access — Start sessions from Slack, refine in the web UI, edit in web-based VS Code, or review on mobile—everything stays synced.
- Skip the Ticket Queue — PMs and designers can turn requests directly into PRs without waiting for engineering cycles.
- Self-Hostable & Open Source — Licensed under MIT; deploy it yourself or use the managed deployment option tailored to your team's repos, tools, and workflows.
- Modern Infrastructure — Control plane on Cloudflare Workers + Durable Objects for session management and WebSocket streaming; data plane on Modal-powered sandboxed environments running autonomous coding agents.
- GitHub Integration — Agents open pull requests directly in your repositories, complete with proper attribution and ready for review.
