Deslop

Deslop is an open-source, MIT-licensed agent skill published on GitHub by fayerman-source. It teaches AI coding assistants and agentic frameworks to audit, draft, and rewrite dense legal text and verbose AI-generated prose into clear, plain English. The skill is distributed as a portable SKILL.md file and works natively with Google Antigravity CLI, Claude Code, Codex CLI, and a growing list of other tools.

What It Is

Deslop is a style-guide-as-skill that applies the core principles of plain-language legal drafting — inspired by Bryan Garner's Legal Writing in Plain English — to transform legalese and "AI slop" into readable, high-density prose. It is not a standalone application but a portable instruction set that plugs into existing AI agent frameworks. The skill covers legal writing specifically but its rules (sentence architecture, active voice, omitting needless words) apply equally to business memos, technical documentation, and general correspondence.

Core Writing Rules Enforced

The skill encodes a comprehensive set of plain-language rules that the agent applies during audits and rewrites:

• Legalese Buster: replaces archaic terms (aforesaid, hereinafter) and redundant doublets (null and void)
• S-V-O Optimization: reconstructs sentences to place subjects and verbs near the beginning, targeting a 20-word average sentence length
• Nominalization De-bloater: converts buried verbs (make a decision → decide) back into strong active verbs
• Deep Issue Framing: restructures legal issues into a clean "premise-premise-question" format under 75 words
• Rule Tabulation: formats multi-part legal rules into structured, parallel, indented sub-items
• Double-Entry Number Clean-up: eliminates parenthetical repetition (three (3) days → 3 days)
• Gender-Neutral Drafting: replaces binary pronouns with modern inclusive phrasing
• Oxford Comma Enforcement and ABA Publication Style Compliance

Supported Agent Frameworks and Setup Paths

Deslop uses the portable SKILL.md (Agent Skills) format natively supported by several major CLI tools. Installation paths include:

• Antigravity CLI (Google's successor to Gemini CLI): clone into .agents/skills/deslop or ~/.gemini/skills/deslop; the skill is auto-discovered on restart
• Claude Code: clone into ~/.claude/skills/deslop (personal) or .claude/skills/deslop (project); invoke explicitly with /deslop
• Codex CLI: clone into .agents/skills/ directories; invoke with $deslop
• skills.sh registry: universal quick install via npx skills add fayerman-source/deslop across 20+ agents
• Other tools (Aider, Cursor, GitHub Copilot): load SKILL.md as a rules or instructions file

Audit Output Format

When invoked, the agent returns a structured audit table with one row per rule section (I–VI), listing what was checked, what violations were found, and what terms were preserved verbatim as legal terms of art. Sections with no violations report "none found." The plain-English rewrite follows the audit table.

Update: Active Development as of Mid-2026

The repository was created in June 2026 and last pushed in September 2026, indicating active early development. The README documents the transition from Gemini CLI to Antigravity CLI (Gemini CLI sunset date: June 18, 2026) and notes that Antigravity's native install command is still in flux. The project has 18 GitHub stars and is accepting contributions via issues and pull requests.
