Dremio

Dremio is a data lakehouse platform, now part of SAP according to its site, that combines an Intelligent Query Engine, an AI Semantic Layer, an Open Catalog powered by Apache Polaris and a built-in AI agent. It is offered as a fully managed cloud service or as self-managed software.

What It Is

Dremio describes itself as the Agentic Lakehouse: an open, Iceberg-native platform for analytical and AI workloads across enterprise data. Users and AI agents query data in place through federated queries across sources such as relational databases, data warehouses, NoSQL stores, external lakehouses and object storage, without ETL. The data can be structured, semi-structured or unstructured.

Agent connectivity

Dremio provides an MCP integration to connect assistants such as Claude, ChatGPT and Gemini. A Dremio CLI gives coding agents such as Claude Code and Codex direct lakehouse access. The semantic layer supplies business context such as metrics, definitions and relationships so agents work from one consistent source of truth. Agents inherit the user's identity and access controls.

Iceberg and autonomous management

The Arrow-based engine processes Apache Iceberg data natively. The Open Catalog, built on Apache Polaris, allows read/write access from Iceberg REST engines. Dremio states that table optimization (clustering, compaction, vacuum, variant shredding) runs automatically. It also describes Autonomous Reflections that accelerate queries based on observed patterns, serverless scaling and end-to-end caching.

Editions and access control

Products include Dremio Cloud, Dremio Enterprise (Kubernetes, on-premise or cloud) and a free Community Edition for local machines or servers. Fine-grained and role-based access controls are enforced from client to source, with OAuth tokens passed through credential vending.
