About GitBook
GitBook is a documentation platform from GitBook INC. for creating, maintaining, and publishing product docs, help centers, and knowledge bases for both human readers and AI agents. It combines a visual editor, Git-based workflows, AI writing and answering tools, and an MCP server. The company says its focus is keeping docs accurate rather than only making them readable by agents.
What It Is
GitBook is a hosted docs platform. Teams write in the editor, sync content from a GitHub or GitLab repository, or drive it from an MCP client such as Claude, ChatGPT, or Cursor. Content can be published as a docs site on a custom domain, embedded in a product, or restricted to authorized visitors through authenticated access.
How It Keeps Docs Accurate
GitBook Agent drafts and edits content, reviews change requests, and flags content that no longer matches the product against a style guide. Updates are queued for human review before publication. AI Insights and content gaps analytics show what visitors and agents ask and where documentation is missing, so teams know what to fix first.
Serving Readers and Agents
GitBook Assistant answers questions on a published site from the docs and connected support sources, in the sidebar or search box, and can be embedded in a website or product. Published docs can also be exposed through an MCP server so customers' agents can read them. A setup prompt lets Claude, Codex, or Cursor create and publish a site through the GitBook MCP tools.
Collaboration and Enterprise Controls
Teams use change requests, comments, merge rules, and role-based permissions to review content before it goes live. Two-way Git Sync supports a docs-as-code workflow, and a CLI and API allow scripting and custom components. The enterprise page lists SAML SSO, access controls, migration support, and SOC 2, ISO 27001 and GDPR compliance.
