Memento

git-memento is an open-source Git extension from mandel-macaque that records the AI coding session behind a commit. It attaches Codex or Claude Code session transcripts to commits as git notes, so reviewers can see why a change was requested as well as what changed. What It Is

git-memento is a command-line tool that installs as a git memento subcommand. It targets development teams who use AI coding assistants and want transparency, code review context, compliance support, or debugging and onboarding history. It commits through the normal Git flow and stores the session as human-readable markdown in git notes.

How the Workflow Works

After a one-time git memento init codex or git memento init claude per repository, you run git memento commit <session-id> -m "message". The tool fetches the session from the configured provider CLI and attaches it to the commit. amend carries notes over to amended commits and can append a new session, and a single note can hold sessions from different providers. A summary mode (--summary-skill) stores a generated summary in the default notes ref and keeps the full transcript in refs/notes/memento-full-audit.

Sharing, Auditing and Note Carry-Over

git memento push and share-notes sync refs/notes/* to the remote, and teammates retrieve them with notes-sync. audit reports commits in a range that lack notes and validates note metadata, failing in strict mode. doctor diagnoses provider config, notes refs and remote sync. notes-rewrite-setup and notes-carry preserve notes through rebases and squashes.

CI/CD Integration

The repository provides a reusable GitHub Action with three modes: comment posts notes as commit comments, gate fails a pull request when note coverage checks fail, and merge-carry carries notes from PR commits onto the merge commit. A companion install action sets up git-memento in CI jobs.

Setup Path

An install script downloads the latest release binary for your OS and architecture, or you can build from source with the .NET SDK 10 using NativeAOT. Git and a provider CLI (Codex or Claude Code) must be installed. The tool treats session transcripts as untrusted data when generating summaries.
