Routebase is a Berlin-based API lifecycle platform built around a single living OpenAPI spec that drives every stage of API development — from visual design and mock servers to automated testing, published documentation, and AI agent tooling. The product is live and available with a self-service signup, and every new account starts with a full-featured trial. Routebase GmbH operates the platform on Microsoft Azure with a choice of EU or US data residency.

What It Is

Routebase is a contract-first API platform that eliminates the drift between a team's API spec and its real-world implementation. Instead of maintaining separate tools for design, mocking, testing, and docs, Routebase treats the OpenAPI spec as the single source of truth and generates all downstream artifacts from it automatically. The platform covers five numbered lifecycle stages — Design, Mock, Test, Document, and Agents — each tightly coupled to the same spec so that a change in one stage propagates everywhere else.

How the Lifecycle Works

The five-stage workflow is the core product architecture:

• Design (1.0): A visual editor lets teams build OpenAPI specs — endpoints, schemas, versions — without hand-editing YAML. Reusable schemas, spec branches, and governance rules are built in.
• Mock (2.0): A spec-driven mock server spins up instantly with a dedicated URL per project. Custom rules and proxy mode let frontend teams build in parallel with backend development.
• Test (3.0): Test suites run requests and assertions against any environment. The spec defines what "passing" means. Scheduled runs and security scanning are included on higher tiers.
• Document (4.0): A published docs portal is generated directly from the spec. Code samples in six languages are auto-generated for every endpoint, and a custom domain is available on Pro and above.
• Agents (5.0): Every workspace ships a built-in MCP server exposing 400+ lifecycle tools. Agents such as Claude or Cursor can discover, call, design, lint, and test APIs under the same team-scoped permissions as human users — no glue code required.

API Governance and Drift Detection

Routebase includes a continuous drift monitor that replays real traffic against the live spec on a configurable schedule (as frequently as every five minutes). Every divergence — missing fields, extra fields, type mismatches, undocumented additions — is classified and surfaced with field-level diffs. Breaking-change detection is also built into the spec branching and merge-request workflow, so teams catch contract violations before they reach consumers.

Developer Workflow: Branch, Review, Merge

Spec changes follow a Git-style workflow: draft on a spec branch, open a merge request, get review and approval, then merge. Conflict detection and breaking-change checks run automatically before merge. The main branch stays untouched while work is in progress, mirroring the code review patterns most engineering teams already use.

MCP Server and Agent-Ready APIs

The built-in MCP server is a first-class feature rather than an add-on. The platform states it ships 400+ MCP tools covering the full API lifecycle — design, mock, test, docs, and governance. Agents connect to the same workspace permissions model as human team members, meaning access control and governance rules apply equally to automated and human actors. Platform and Deployment

Routebase is a web-based SaaS platform with no local installation required for the core product. A desktop download is also listed on the site. Data residency is selectable between EU and US regions at signup, both running on Microsoft Azure. Import paths exist for OpenAPI specs, Postman collections, and Insomnia collections. Enterprise accounts include SAML SSO, SCIM provisioning, audit log export, and dedicated support — and are described as fully self-service starting at 25 seats with no sales call required.
