    About RustChain

RustChain is an open-source Layer-1 blockchain built by Elyan Labs (Lake Charles, Louisiana) that uses a novel consensus mechanism called Proof of Antiquity (PoA) to reward miners based on the age and rarity of their physical hardware. Licensed under Apache 2.0 and available on GitHub, the project is actively maintained with its latest release (v3.1.2-miner) published in May 2026. The core thesis is that vintage computers — PowerPC G4s, SPARCstations, 486 laptops, IBM POWER8 servers — have computational value and should be preserved rather than landfilled.

    What It Is

RustChain is a Decentralized Physical Infrastructure Network (DePIN) where the value proposition is hardware longevity rather than raw compute speed. Unlike Proof-of-Work (which rewards the fastest ASICs) or Proof-of-Stake (which rewards the largest wallets), Proof of Antiquity enforces a 1 CPU = 1 Vote model: each unique physical device gets one consensus participation slot per epoch, and reward shares are then weighted by the device's antiquity multiplier. A PowerBook G4 from 2003 earns a 2.5x multiplier; a Motorola 68000 machine earns 3.0x; a modern x86_64 starts at 0.8x but grows over time. The total fixed supply is 8,388,608 RTC (2²³), with 94% allocated to block mining rewards.

Proof of Antiquity and Anti-VM Fingerprinting

The consensus mechanism relies on a 7-point hardware fingerprint system that the project claims no virtual machine can replicate:

    • Clock-Skew & Oscillator Drift — silicon aging patterns unique to physical hardware
    • Cache Timing Fingerprint — L1/L2/L3 latency profiles
    • SIMD Unit Identity — AltiVec, SSE, AVX, or NEON detection
    • Thermal Drift Entropy — heat curves that differ between real and emulated hardware
    • Instruction Path Jitter Map — microarchitecture-specific patterns
    • Anti-Emulation Behavioral Checks — detects QEMU, VMware, VirtualBox
    • ROM Fingerprint Clustering — catches emulator farms sharing identical ROM dumps

VMs receive 1 billionth of normal rewards by design. The server-side attestation layer cross-validates SIMD features against claimed architecture and analyzes timing distributions for synthetic regularity.

Tenure-Grown Multipliers and the Aging Incentive

A key design element (introduced via RIP-200) is that hardware ages into the network: all miners gain +5% per year of tenure, capped at +50% after 10 years. A modern x86_64 that starts at 0.8x reaches 1.0x after five years of continuous mining. A PowerPC G4 that starts at 2.5x reaches 3.75x after ten years. This means the network economically incentivizes keeping machines running rather than replacing them — the project states its fleet of 16+ preserved machines draws roughly the same power as one modern GPU mining rig while preventing significant manufacturing waste.

AI Agent Economy and the Beacon Protocol

RustChain positions itself as infrastructure for autonomous AI agents, not just a mining network. The project ships several components toward this goal:

    • Beacon (pip install beacon-skill / npm install -g beacon-skill) — an agent-to-agent protocol for signed envelopes, agent discovery via .well-known/beacon.json, UDP broadcast for LAN mesh, and RTC micropayments. Ed25519 keypairs serve as agent identity.
    • TrashClaw — a zero-dependency local LLM agent that runs on any supported hardware.
    • wRTC on Solana — a wrapped token bridge allowing native RTC to be traded on Raydium, Jupiter, and other Solana DEXes. The project notes this pool is early-stage with thin liquidity.
    • BoTTube — an AI-native video platform within the ecosystem.
    • LangChain integration — pip install langchain-rustchain-tools plus CrewAI, AutoGen, Agno, and smolagents integrations in the repository.

The project also defines Proof of Provenance (RIP-0310), a spec that binds agent identity and verified physical hardware to published content, with a DOI registered on Zenodo.

    Research and Upstream Contributions

Elyan Labs has published five peer-registered preprints on Zenodo covering the consensus design, hardware entropy, and LLM inference optimizations on POWER8 hardware. One paper ("Emotional Vocabulary as Semantic Grounding") was accepted to the CVPR 2026 GRAIL-V workshop per the README. The team also reports upstream code contributions merged into OpenSSL, curl, wolfSSL, ImageMagick, and Uber h3, with open PRs on LLVM, PyTorch, vLLM, and Ghidra.

    Update: v3.1.2-miner and Active Development

The GitHub repository shows active development through August 2026, with the latest release being v3.1.2-miner (published May 29, 2026), described as a critical fingerprint fix for the Windows miner. The project reports 5 attestation nodes across North America and Asia, 20+ active miners, and the homepage displays the current version as RustChain v2.2.1-rip200. The README notes a first commercial anchoring engagement in July 2026 for a U.S. legal-corpus determinism project run by Elyan Labs.
