Standard Code

Standard Code is a cloud-based coding agent built and operated by Standard Agents. It offers unlimited usage per active session through a novel lines-of-service billing model, where each line powers one concurrent session rather than metering by token quota. The product is currently in early access, with users joining a waitlist to receive an invite key.

What It Is

Standard Code is a cloud-hosted autonomous coding agent designed to handle large, real-world software engineering tasks end-to-end. Unlike token-quota-based AI coding tools, Standard Code bills by "lines of service" — each line supports one active session with no usage cap. Sessions run persistently in the cloud and can be resumed from any connected client, including a CLI, web app, macOS app, iOS app, or via the REST/WebSocket API.

How the Agent Architecture Works

Standard Code is built as a coordinated swarm of domain-specific sub-agents rather than a single monolithic model. Key architectural properties include:

• Automatic sub-agent dispatch: Specialized agents for code exploration, research, asset creation, and context compaction are invoked automatically as needed.
• Non-blocking compaction: A dedicated sub-agent compacts long-running threads in flight, so sessions never pause mid-task.
• Sub-agents don't consume lines: Sub-agent work runs independently and does not count against a user's active lines of service.
• Goal-oriented execution: The agent sets a goal, breaks it into steps, and works through them sequentially with unlimited usage until complete.

Two Agent Variants

Standard Code ships two curated agent configurations:

• Unlimited One: The default agent powered by open-weight models. Described by Standard Agents as the world's first curated coding agent of this architecture.
• Sama One: The same domain-specific agent architecture powered by OpenAI models, using the user's existing ChatGPT Pro / Codex token quotas. Requires at least one active Standard Code line of service.

Platform and Client Coverage

Sessions are always-on and cloud-resident, meaning the underlying work continues even if the driving client disconnects. Standard Code ships first-party native clients for:

• Terminal (CLI)
• Web app
• macOS app
• iOS app
• Programmable REST and WebSocket API (no SDK required)

Thread history, queued messages, and unsent drafts stay synchronized across all clients. The API uses bearer token authentication, making it suitable for CI pipelines, internal dashboards, or product integrations.

Additional Capabilities

Beyond core coding, Standard Code includes:

• Agent Skills and MCP server support: Install persistent skills and connect any MCP server across sessions.
• Failover: When a model provider fails, the session migrates to another provider mid-run without losing thread state.
• Per-tool permission gates: Users control exactly which tools the agent can invoke.
• Remote approvals: Permission prompts follow the user to whichever client they are currently watching.
• Asset generation: A dedicated sub-agent can create icons, hero images, and sprite sheets, run its own QA, and place files directly into the project.

Update: Version 0.12.1

The homepage displays Standard Code v0.12.1 as the current version. The product is in early access as of 2026, with users able to request a waitlist key or redeem an existing invite code to start. Standard Agents has also listed "Standard Agent Spec" and "Standard Agent Builder" as coming-soon products, signaling an expanding platform roadmap beyond the core coding agent.
