About Terax
Terax is an open-source desktop app by crynta that combines a terminal, code editor, file explorer, source control, web preview, and an agentic AI workflow in one small binary. It runs on macOS, Linux, and Windows, and works with your own API keys or fully local models. The project site lists v0.8.6 while the GitHub release metadata shows v0.9.0.
What It Is
Terax is a terminal-first development environment built on Tauri 2, Rust, and React. It uses a native PTY backend with a WebGL-rendered terminal, a CodeMirror 6 editor, and an AI side panel. It can be used as a plain terminal without the AI features. The About page states there is no account, no backend, and no telemetry, and that it is not a full IDE with debugger UI or refactoring tools.
AI Workflow
Agents can read, write, edit, grep, and glob files, run bash commands with approval gating, and manage background processes. Features include plan mode, sub-agents, custom agents with their own system prompts and tool subsets, and project memory in a TERAX.md file. AI edits appear as diffs that can be accepted or rejected hunk by hunk. The composer supports prompt snippets via #handle, files via @path, and voice input. Terax can also spawn Claude Code in a terminal and send follow-up work through approval-gated tools.
Model Access
BYOK providers include OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini, Groq, xAI, Cerebras, OpenRouter, DeepSeek, Mistral, and any OpenAI-compatible endpoint. Local inference runs through LM Studio, MLX, or Ollama. API keys are stored in the OS keychain.
Workspace Features
The terminal supports multi-tab, split panels, and shells such as zsh, bash, pwsh, fish, and cmd, with WSL workspaces on Windows. The editor offers Vim mode, inline AI autocomplete, and opt-in language server support. Source control includes hunk-level staging, commits, and a commit graph. The web preview auto-detects local dev servers and opens them in a tab. Custom themes and background images are supported.
Current Status
The README notes that a v0.9.0 update is in progress, including a move from xterm.js to libghostty with WebGPU.
