About Zuse
Zuse is a chat-first desktop application for developers who work with AI coding agents. It wraps Claude Code, Codex, Grok, Gemini, Cursor, OpenCode, and Kiro in a persistent, project-aware interface — giving each task its own isolated git worktree, structured chat history, and a rich composer. The project is open source under the AGPL-3.0 license and is currently in alpha/beta, free to use during the beta period with no token markup.
What It Is
Zuse is an AI coding agent orchestration workspace — a desktop app that sits above your existing agent subscriptions and coordinates them without replacing them. Rather than locking you into one provider, Zuse lets you connect the agents you already pay for and run them in parallel, carry context between sessions, and review every diff before anything ships. It targets macOS and x64 Linux and stores all session data locally in SQLite.
How the Multi-Agent Workflow Works
The core idea is that different agents can handle different steps of the same task:
- Plan with one model, implement with another — start a Claude Code planning session, then hand off the plan, transcript, or relevant files to a Codex implementation session.
- Fork when a provider hits its limit — copy the transcript or write an explicit handoff context and continue in a new provider session.
- Pick a model per step — choose which agent handles planning, coding, and review on a per-task basis, not per project.
Each task gets its own branch and git worktree so parallel agent runs never overwrite each other. Zuse also supports multiple tabs sharing a single worktree, so implementation, diff review, and terminal checks can run side by side on the same branch.
Architecture and Tech Stack
Zuse is built as an Electron 42 monorepo with a React 19 + TypeScript renderer, Tailwind CSS v4, and shadcn/ui. Key architectural choices include:
- Effect.ts for the runtime layer (Layer, Stream, Schema)
- SQLite for persistent storage of projects, sessions, messages, and tool calls
- Keychain-backed API key storage — no plaintext credentials
- xterm.js + node-pty for the integrated PTY terminal
- CodeMirror 6 for the file editor (TS/TSX, JS, JSON, Markdown, HTML, CSS, Python, Rust, Go)
- @effect/rpc with Electron IPC transport for inter-process communication
- An open-source MCP server that connects compatible clients to the installed desktop app over stdio
The monorepo includes apps/desktop, apps/renderer, apps/server, and apps/web, plus shared packages/contracts and packages/ui.
Deployment Model: Local-First with Cloud Beta
Zuse runs locally by default — agent credentials stay in each developer's own tools and are never sent to Zuse's servers. A cloud beta layer adds hosted E2B workspaces that keep agent sessions running after the desktop app closes. Cloud features include:

Built-In Browser Verification
Zuse includes a headless browser that agents can drive to verify application flows. Developers can import valid cookies from a local Chrome or Safari profile (passwords are never imported), then instruct an agent to navigate, fill forms, click controls, and assert page state. Screenshots and traces are kept in the agent thread. This makes it possible to describe a flow like "sign in, finish checkout, verify the receipt" and have the agent perform and verify the browser actions.
Update: Zuse 0.21.0
The latest GitHub release is v0.21.0, published on September 5, 2026. The repository was last pushed on September 7, 2026, indicating active development. The project launched in May 2026 and has shipped 21 versioned releases in roughly four months, covering agent sessions, the composer, git worktrees, cloud workspaces, the PR & Changes pane, the file viewer/editor, sub-agent delegation, and the built-in browser. The homepage notes the cloud beta is live and that the desktop app is free during beta.
