xAI
To understand the true nature of the universe through building maximally truth-seeking AI. xAI develops advanced AI systems, with flagship product Grok, designed to be more transparent and less politically restricted than competitors.
Founding Story
xAI was founded by Elon Musk in response to his concerns about AI safety and what he viewed as the 'betrayal' of OpenAI's founding principles. After co-founding OpenAI in 2015 as a nonprofit to provide an open-source counterweight to big tech, Musk resigned from the board in 2018 due to conflicts. He grew increasingly critical of OpenAI's transition to a closed, for-profit model partnered with Microsoft. In March 2023, Musk incorporated xAI in Nevada, officially announcing it on July 12, 2023. His motivation was to create a 'maximally truth-seeking' AI that would be more transparent and less politically restricted than competitors. Musk recruited a founding team of 12 former employees from OpenAI, DeepMind, Google, Microsoft, and Tesla. The company's stated mission is to 'understand the true nature of the universe,' operating on the philosophy that a maximally curious AI will be inherently pro-humanity.
