Big Pickle and Space Bunny are basically free samples. AI companies drop a new model for free for a while to get feedback, then it disappears or starts costing money. So the trick isn't finding one free model. It's knowing where the free samples show up.

    Here's where to look:

    • OpenRouter: the biggest one, and where Space Bunny came from. Make a free account (no card), grab a key, and use any model that ends in :free. Pro tip: set your model to openrouter/free and it'll pick a working free one for you, so nothing breaks when models get swapped out.
    • Kilo Code: gets a lot of the same free promo models, plus its own free stealth ones.
    • Ollama: their cloud side picks up free models too (and you can always run models on your own machine for free).
    • Mistral AI: has a free coding model right now through Mistral Vibe CLI.
    • Vercel AI Gateway and NVIDIA NIM also hand out free models fairly often.

All of these plug right into OpenCode. Just add the provider and pick the model.

    Heads up on two things:

    1. These come and go fast. Space Bunny's already gone. Expect to switch every few weeks.
    2. Free usually means they can use what you send to train the model. Don't paste in work code or anything private.
